All You Need is Rice – From Sheila M @amazon.com
Zojirushi NP-HBC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker
This is my first rice cooker, and I’m delighted. The first time I used the cooker I brought the rice to a picnic lunch to share with a friend. It was simple brown rice mixed with a little black rice. My friend exclaimed that it was the best tasting brown rice she’d ever eaten. And I had not mentioned that I’d purchased the rice cooker, so it was a totally unprovoked comment. I get home late from work and have always been too lazy/hurried to prepare brown rice for my dinner, but now it’s ready when I get home and the kitchen smells good and I’m even more motivated to prepare the veggies to go with it.

Zojirushi NP-HBC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker
I’ve owned this rice cooker for four months now. I use it about 3 to 4 times a week with stellar results each and every time. I’ve made rice, short grain rice (to make sushi with), brown basmati rice, short grain brown rice, mahogony and wild rice mixed together, and even quinoa with it. They have all come out perfect with it. A lot of times, I’ll throw in the rice in the morning and don’t even think about it until dinner comes around, at which point I have perfect rice waiting for me.

Zojirushi NP-HBC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker
I was used to my college rice cooker for the last decade. That gave out and did some research and got the Zojirushi. At my local Japanese mega store that is pretty much all they carry.
Takes a bit more time to cook. I’d say add about 15-20 min to cooking time. But the rice is just PERFECT. Never in my life have I had brown rice actually taste good! If you make rice in the old machine and eat it an hour after its done, it tastes old and not quite warm and too dry. This ‘keep warm’ actually does what you ask. It’s as if you actually just made the batch of rice, even thought the rice is 4-5 hours old.
The size is perfect for my wife and I to cook small batches (2c) or 5 c when we have people over.
Made regular short grain, sweet, and brown rice. All great.
Highly recommended.
Zojirushi Rice Cooker Cons
This section is going to be short and sweet – which is a good thing! – since there really aren’t that many legitimate claims against the NP-HBC10. But here are the few that you should be aware of:
- Some have complained that their Zojirushi Rice Cooker didn’t last more than a year or so. Okay. Well since no one knows how the machine was used, the fact that they claim they used it “gently” is really hard to verify. Others have used it regularly over a much longer period of time and had no problems.
- Some wing nut is running around saying the inner pan is toxic, but he is trying to sell a product of his own, so you know how much that legitimizes his claim!
- You are provided with a 6.2oz measuring cup, and the units water level markings are based on that. So, make sure you use the cup provided, and make sure you don’t lose it! Oh, and be sure to measure level amounts or you will be in trouble!
- Cooking with the Zojirushi Rice Cooker will take longer than the more traditional stovetop method.
- Timer is in military time, which might confuse some initially.
- The manual says that this rice cooker doesn’t work up to par at elevations of more than 3000 ft, but one reviewer points out that she lives at an elevation of more than 7000 ft and the unit works perfectly for her. She can’t imagine that her perfect rice would be even better if she lived at a lower elevation.
So, there you have it. Know you have no excuses to hesitate. There really aren’t any significant drawbacks to the NP-HBC10. Head on over to amazon and buy one for yourself, or maybe as a kithcen gift!
