So far, I have cooked a stuffed pork chop, cinnamon rolls, chocolate chip cookies and a 10 inch frozen pizza. All came out near perfect to perfect. I would attribute this to the quality of the convection motor. I might even go as far as comparing the quality and effectiveness of this motor to that of a Hobart. If you’re looking for a high quality and extrememly versatile convection/microwave/so much more, then you can stop looking. I would have paid a lot more if I knew it was going to be this good. Sharp R 820JS – A Great Kitchen Gift!

So, would we have you believe that the Sharp R 820JS is perfect? Nope! One of the drawbacks seems to be the fact that this R820JS is somewhat complicated. It appears that people think this is just like a regular microwave where all you have to do is put your food in and selection a length of time. Not so! This is not a regular microwave and doesn’t work like a regular microwave.

If you have an aversion to reading manuals, forget about buying this appliance. You need to read the manual to learn how to use it. So if you’re technically challenged, or you can’t be bothered to read, move along!

Another thing to mention is that this microwave cannot be mounted above a range.

Treated myself to all new small kitchen appliances when my husband and I bought another house. Love gadgets and tech, especially in the kitchen … but like everyone else, expect them to work, be worth it. Had fun researching every purchase. My kitchen counter space is limited – wanted multi purpose. Never liked the taste of microwaved foods – in the past just used for warm ups etc. … until I bought this microwave! It delivers. Not much to say here. This is a very versatile oven. I like it because I am single and don’t use my oven a lot. It doubles as a toaster, roaster and microwave. The grill elements heat up very quickly so making grilled cheese in < 5 minutes. Water boils (uncovered) in < 2.5 minutes, uncovered it should boil faster.

this is the best countertop item i own! it is a combo microwave/oven/grill, and is perfect for small meals, tho it can fit a large chicken in on the rack with no problem. no need to heat up the house with the big oven in the summer, and much less wasting of electricity (i have an electric stove and oven). it has great features that work well overall. the automatic settings for cooking have cooked everything to perfection, better than i can by doing it manually. i don’t know how it does it!

the only time i have to override and go manual is for baked potatoes (which, to be honest, really are not perfect in a microwave, they always get a bit hard on the bottoms). i found a way around that tho; microwave for 3/4 of the time, then bake for the last bit. they come out like a full-on baked potato, but only take around 15 – 20 minutes.

i use the manual setting for the grill and convection oven a lot as well, for additional control over the cooking. but for someone who wants an all-purpose combo oven, i cannot praise this highly enough.

i have had mine for 5 years, and it is still cooking perfectly. i just passed it to my daughter, who is thrilled to have it! i am buying a new one this week! yay for me!

R 820JS Pros

Since we’ve already discussed in depth the advantages of Sharp R 820JS, there really isn’t any need to get into it here as well. But just a few highlights.

• Versatility! The R820JS will take the place of a microwave, an indoor grill and a toaster oven. So if you want to cut down on your small kitchen appliance, this is the way to go.
• Hate turning the oven on on those broiling summer days? Here is the answer to your prayers. While the R 820JS will put off heats, it’s nothing to compare with your oven

R 820JS Cons

There are a few negative reviews about this microwave, saying that it didn’t last that long. Deal with it people! Nothing is build to last long anymore! Just because your old microwave-or any other appliance-lasted for 25 years, do NOT expect that to happen anymore. You have a good chance of whatever appliance you buy dying on you within 5 years. Actually, if you get 5 years, do a happy dance! My point is, you need to take these complaints with a grain of salt, as the same would be true with anything you buy.

Next, if you buy it, read the manual! A lot of people complain that they can’t microwave popcorn. This is not a regular microwave, it’s a convection microwave. The manual tells you how to microwave your popcorn.

Okay, let’s move on to points that actually have some validity.

• This unit cannot not be installed over a heat source, so if you were wanting to put it above your range, that’s a no no. Choose something other than the Sharp R 820JS.
• This microwave is somewhat complicated, so if you’re technically inept, or have an aversion to reading directions, buy something else. You have to remember this isn’t a simple microwave. Since the R-820JS incorporates other technologies, a little bit more than choosing the number of minutes to cook or reheat something is necessary
• This is not a particularly large microwave, so make sure .9 cubit feet is big enough for you.
• Some may find it noisier than a standard microwave, and the cooling fans run for a while after using it as a convection oven.
• The convection oven can take a while to heat up, but then so does a regular oven.
• A few people have complained of a “chemical” burning smell, which seems to indicate that the unit it about to die

For the most part, the Sharp R-820JS is a great convection microwave, and in many cases perceived deficiencies would have been solved by reading the manual. Do not expect it to work like a normal microwave, because it is not a normal microwave!
